He lives with his father (Robin Harris), a gruff but lovable disciplinarian who doesn't want to seem unreasonable but does believe a kid should do his homework before partying at night. Crashing the reunion, Kid has the DJ scratch and mix a few of his old doo wop records so that he can liven the party with a rap, until Stab and the others arrive. Kid and the bullies are caught by the neighborhood police, who humiliate the teenagers before letting them go. Kid's father is stopped and harassed by the police while trying to find him. At the very beginning of the movie, kids dance inside of a house, and the noise is so loud that it blows the roof off. Though at times crude and raunchy, “House Party” makes a point of dealing with issues of sexual responsibility, teen-age drinking, male-female relationships and family values.

Young Fly is more than game to play him as a freaked-out flake. He might be wearing a T-shirt that says “Comic Relief.” Yet the script, by Jamal Olori and Stephen Glover, doesn’t give him lines that crackle and catch fire. But too much of this plays rather rotely, without the verve the film keeps promising. There’s a perfect callback to the song that inspired House Party, “Bad Boy/Having a Party,” at the very beginning of the film. “House Party” (MPAA rated R for language) is jazzy, sassy, dense with hip-hop hip and corny gags. The Hudlins take us right into their world, catch the feel of kids at loose ends, hot to trot on a balmy night. What began with Chill pressing Kid to show him a particular maneuver turned into the scene that defined the entire movie. It’s impromptu, transitioning quickly from a sequestered kitchen exchange to the heart of the party. The scene pits Kid ’n Play’s brash, free-form style against Campbell and Johnson’s fluid, Soul Train–esque method.
As the title suggest, each movies find the protagonists hosting a party, though at different locations and for different reasons. But the movie does exactly what a cheerful, unpretentious genre piece should do. It connects with its subject and audience, gives us some music, laughs, a little sentiment.
